Barking & Dagenham Thunder Basketball Club
Known as the BAD Thunder, the London-based club play in the English Basketball League and was developed to provide high-quality basketball to young and aspiring players in the region. Established in 2008 by Managing Director, Marlan Henry and a regional school sports partnership, Henry drove a community after-school program to encourage basketball. A subsequent link to the Barking & Dagenham Primary School was established which founded the “Gifted & Talented” sessions that offered various sporting activities. The sessions were well received and an under-12 team was formed, which took part in local tournaments and the London Youth Games.
In 2011, Marlan Henry acquired a former teammate from the London Leopards, Rávidson Teixeira to become a part of the Thunder coaching staff. With the Thunder’s national league squad playing their second season in the EBL U15’s, coach Rávidson assisted Henry throughout the season, contributing to the club’s growth. Since established, the club now runs a total of three teams in the national league (u14, u16 and u18’s boys) as well as u12’s mixed and u16 girls in the local league.
The club has forged outstanding relationships within the community and continue to grow and welcome players of all standards to join and enjoy the sport. Several key players left to further their basketball development overseas, namely Spanish international Robinson Idehen now playing in Modesto, California and Legend Robertin who just signed for Clemson University in the USA.
